Guys used to say that they read Playboy magazine for the articles. In 2012, Ben Pieratt and I dared to ask, “What if you could read the news, but just for the pictures?”
Lookwork attempted to fill the void left by FFFFOUND!, a cult favorite image bookmarking service. Users could curate their own feeds from thousands of graphic design and art blogs, and even form a mega–feed based on the subscriptions of others.
I originally developed it in raw PHP + Javascript, and later ported the whole beast to Laravel + Angular. The feed updates were driven by a “push RSS” standard called PubSubHubBub, which I developed a deep, emotionally abusive relationship with.
To this day, nothing delivers the raw, daily visual firehose of a personally curated Lookwork feed. I still miss it.
